Welcome!

Mark Lutter has been Professor of Sociology at the University of Wuppertal since 2017. Prior to this, he was a Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne (2014–2017). He has also been a visiting scholar at Harvard University, ETH Zurich, Sciences Po Paris, and Utrecht University.

His research is situated in the sociology of science, social stratification, and economic sociology. It focuses on the mechanisms that generate, structure, and reproduce social inequalities in careers, performance evaluations, and opportunities for success. Methodologically, his work is based on quantitative approaches, particularly longitudinal analysis, social network analysis, and experimental methods. His research has been published in leading international journals, including American Sociological Review, European Sociological Review, Sociology, Research Policy, and International Sociology.
